Professorship in Ergonomic working environment and Musculoskeletal Disorders

At the Danish National Research Centre for the Working Environment, we research topics of importance to today’s – and tomorrow’s – working environment and occupational safety and health. As a government research institute under the Danish Ministry of Employment, it is our task to monitor and evaluate trends in our working environment and draw attention to new risks. We train new researchers and publish our research results in reputable peer-reviewed journals. We convey research-based knowledge to workplaces, authorities, the two sides of industry and health and safety consultants. This is how we contribute to improving the working environment in Denmark.

Work environment research at top international level

There are five overarching research areas within the NFA. This professor position is anchored in the research area “Ergonomic working environment and MSD”. This research area at NFA is acknowledged for its innovative and high quality research. The professor will be responsible for further developing this research area, and to strengthen it´s position as an international thought leader in ergonomic working environment and MSD research.

The professor will be responsible for implementing and further development of the current research program, which can be found at the homepage of NFA. The research targets present and important working environment issues and potentials in collaboration with the Danish authorities, social partners and other stakeholders. Further, the research is conducted in collaboration with multiple research institutions in Denmark and abroad.

Specifically, you will be responsible for research that contributes to

  • provide research-based knowledge of highest international standards on main issues and potentials within the field of ergonomic work environment and MSD
  • further develop and implement workplace interventions for better prevention of ergonomic risks and MSD, and for promotion of better health of the employees
  • strengthen development, implementation and scale-up of technical-based measurements of ergonomic work environment factors
  • improve our understanding of combinations and interactions of work environmental risk factors for MSD, sickness absence and early withdrawal from the labor market
  • gain knowledge on how to reduce barriers and promote facilitating factors in the promotion of long and healthy working life
  • aid research on development, implementation and scale-up of new technological solutions for improving ergonomic work environment, workers health and work productivity
  • promote research in developing and implementation of the capacity of workplaces to prevent and handle MSD among their employees

The professor will constitute the research management team of the area along with the area’s Head of Research. A key role is to facilitate an efficient, productive and creative research environment. In collaboration with the other members of the staff - senior researchers and researchers - the professor will mentor and supervise PhD students and early career researchers. The professor will be actively involved in dissemination of research to relevant stakeholders. The professor will sustain NFA’s collaboration with national and international research institutes and with key stakeholders. An additional important aspect of the role is planning and preparing proposals for the NFA’s government-related services and supporting the NFA’s strategic goals. The professor will also be responsible for attaining external funding for research, and be productive in publication of peer-reviewed scientific papers.

NFA’s ambition is to produce applied research about Danish working environments based on rigorous research and which results in significant societal impact. The professorship is intended to support the NFA’s research and strategic profile within research on ergonomic work environment and MSD. Additionally, it is expected that the successful candidate has a strong track record with attaining research grants.

Applicants must possess extensive research experience within the field of ergonomic working environment and MSD. This research experience must be documented through scientific production at the international level corresponding to the requirements set for university full professors. Furthermore, the candidate’s research must have contributed substantially to the field of research. The candidate must demonstrate considerable width in methodological and subject matter expertise. It is expected that the applicant has previous experience from a time-limited professor position (with specific duties).

A major selection criterion is experience with initiating and participating in interdisciplinary research programmes. Further, applicants must document significant experience with research supervision. Applicants who can document participation in strong international research networks will be preferred.

Salary and employment terms

The job is a full-time post and limited to a period of 5 years with an option to extend for further 3 years. We would like you to start on 1 April 2023.

You will be employed as a professor according to the collective agreement for academic staff between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) and according to the job specifications for scientific staff with special responsibilities employed at government research institutes.
